Cardiac Rehab Program Available at ROPH

Coming back after experiencing a cardiac event or procedure to a normal life isn’t easy to do on your own. You need a team of experts that can guide you on the path to good health again. That’s why in May Rush Oak Park Hospital added a cardiac rehabilitation program to its specialized services.

The Rush Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is designed to help people with cardiovascular disease lead fuller, healthier and more active lives. Patients will engage in a personalized course of exercise, education, counseling and support by highly skilled professionals, including cardiologists, nurse practitioners, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists.

“Studies have shown that people who undergo rehabilitation after suffering a heart problem are more likely to live longer and healthier lives,” said Melissa Tracy, MD, a cardiologist at Rush and medical director of the Rush Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. “With this program we’re giving patients the tools and the expert care needed to reduce their chances of having another cardiac event. The goal is to lead them down the path to healthier lives by modifying and improving their lifestyle.”

As part of the program, patients who have experienced a cardiac event or have undergone a cardiac procedure will begin a personalized 12-week rehab program, meeting three times per week, to get back on the path to better health. Cardiac rehabilitation services include:

  • Customized exercise training
  • Nutritional counseling and support
  • A plan to help reduce risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Smoking cessation counseling and support
  • Help with weight management
  • Emotional and psychological support, including treatment for anxiety or depression

“Adding a cardiac rehab program to our already dynamic specialty programs is another example of this community hospital’s continued growth,” said Bruce Elegant, president and CEO of Rush Oak Park Hospital. “We’re a hospital with the medical expertise of a major medical center. The community we serve has access to health care experts for medical procedures, treatment and now a full array of the best rehabilitation services.”
