Rush Oak Park Hospital Among Top 10 Percent of Hospitals in Nation Recognized for Safety Excellence

(May 17, 2018) - Rush Oak Park Hospital was recently among a select number of hospitals across the nation to receive top honors for patient safety excellence by Healthgrades, a leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals that assesses more than 4,500 hospitals in the United States. The hospital was one of only 458 hospitals across the nation to achieve Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing them among the top 10 percent of all short-term acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data.

Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Award recognizes a hospital for demonstrating excellent performance in safety provided for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes for 13 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

“Excellence in safety has always been a priority at Rush Oak Park Hospital,” said Bruce Elegant, president and CEO of the hospital. “It’s a component of our commitment to provide quality and compassionate care for our patients. That’s why it’s an honor for our staff to be recognized for this achievement. It shows the dedication is unwavering in providing the highest quality of safety standards here at a community hospital.”

Between 2014 and 2016, Healthgrades analyzed 247,676 potentially preventable patient events and estimated that 126,342 of these events could have been avoided if all hospitals performed similarly to the award recipients like Rush Oak Park Hospital.

“We focus intently on safety with programs and protocols in place to safeguard against medical errors,” said Cynthia Fisch, RN, MBA, MPH, director of Quality Management at Rush Oak Park Hospital. “To be recognized for the work emphasizes the commitment our staff has for our patients.”

“We applaud the hospitals who have received the Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. “Their dedication and commitment to providing safe care creates tangible results for patients.”

The Patient Safety Excellence Award comes on the heels of Rush Oak Park Hospital, Rush University Medical and Rush-Copley Medical Center receiving ‘A’ grades for safety, the highest possible, from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit patient safety watchdog organization. Rush Oak Park Hospital received its fourth consecutive A and its sixth overall, while Rush University Medical Center and Rush Copley Medical Center have received A grades each of the 13 times the Leapfrog Group has rated hospitals.
