Ocelot catheter helps save patients from leg amputations, bypass surgeries

Often dismissed as normal signs of aging, Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a serious condition that if misdiagnosed or left untreated could lead to leg amputation. Symptoms of the disease include painful cramping, numbness, or discoloration in the legs or feet. Rush Oak Park Hospital has recently acquired a new minimally invasive technology to effectively treat PAD.
The Ocelot catheter allows physicians to see from inside the artery during a procedure, using optical coherence tomography, or OCT to navigate through the vessel. In the past, physicians have had to rely solely on x-ray as well as touch and/or feel to guide catheters through complicated blockages. With Ocelot’s recently developed lumivascular approach, physicians can more accurately navigate through blockages thanks to the OCT images they see from inside the artery.
Peripheral artery disease is an under-recognized epidemic that affects between 8 and 12 million adults in the U.S. and 202 million people globally. The disease is caused by a build-up of plaque in the arteries that blocks blood flow to the legs and feet. It can become so severe and difficult to penetrate with traditional catheters that patients and physicians—unaware of advanced treatment options like Ocelot—often resort to undergoing extremely invasive bypass surgeries that result in even higher health risks and lengthy, painful recoveries.
Physicians at Rush Oak Park Hospital use the Ocelot to help restore blood flow in completely blocked arteries in patients’ legs through a simple two-millimeter skin incision. It is a minimally invasive treatment designed to allow patients to return to normal activities within just a few days.
