Gastric Balloon Procedure

Rush Oak Park Hospital offers an FDA-approved, noninvasive procedure to help patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40 who want to lose 20 to 40 pounds.

During the procedure, the surgeon temporarily implants a single silicone balloon using an endoscope, which is a small tube that travels down the esophagus and into the stomach. The balloon is filled with saline solution, which creates a feeling of fullness to help patients eat less. The procedure typically does not require an overnight stay.

After six months, the balloon is removed. In clinical trials, patients lost approximately one-quarter to one-half of their excess weight following the procedure.
